Unbundled Legal Services
What are Unbundled Services?
Unbundled services, or limited scope representation, occurs when you hire us to do those things you aren’t comfortable doing yourself, leaving responsibility for the other aspects of your case for you to handle yourself.
Why Unbundled Legal Services?
The American Bar Association estimates that fewer than three in ten of the legal problems of low-income households are brought to the justice system, and only 4 in 10 for moderate income households. Of those issues that do get brought into the justice system, recent studies indicate at least two-thirds of the family law cases are filed by self-represented litigants. We all know the importance of hiring an attorney, but the fact is most people simply cannot afford one. Unbundling services creates a way to increase legal access for low and middle income households, and creates a way for self-represented litigants to save money and give them more control over the legal process.
How does Unbundling Services work?
When you hire us on an unbundled basis, you are billed for fewer hours, or on a flat fee basis, which costs you less money. Instead of hiring an attorney to handle your entire case start to finish, and paying the high retainer rate that comes with such representation, you can hire us to handle specific parts, which “unbundles” these tasks from the things you can do yourself. Of course, if you find handling the remaining tasks to be overwhelming, you can convert your unbundled services into a full-service case and receive credit against our retainer for the amount of unbundled services you’ve already purchased.
Unbundled legal services is not a good fit for every case. Hiring an attorney for full representation may be what you need, but before you commit to spending thousands of dollars up front, find out if unbundled representation can work for you.
